Isolation and Characterization of a Nitrobenzene-degrading Strain N1 with Multiple Substrates

A bacterial strain N1 capable of degrading nitrobenzene was isolated from the activated sludge in the wastewater treatment system of a chemical factory. It was preliminarily identifi ed as Pseudomonas sp. according to its physiological and biochemical characteristics and the similarity analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence. Strain N1 could utilize nitrobenzene as the sole carbon and nitrogen source for growth, and completely degrade 300 mg L-1 nitrobenzene within 14 h. Strain N1 showed high degrading eff iciency under the condition of 20-35 ℃ and pH 7.0-9.0. The nitrobenzene nitroreductase gene was cloned from strain N1, which implied that it degraded nitrobenzene through the partial reductive pathway. Strain N1 had a broad substrate spectrum, and could also effectively degrade aniline, phenol and other pollutants tested. It could degrade nitrobenzene and aniline simultaneously, suggesting that strain N1 would be a potential candidate for treating wastewater with nitrobenzene and aniline combined pollution.
