Removing Nitrogen from Colistin Sulfate Production Wastewater via Nitri f ication-Denitrif ication Process

Abstract:
Colistin sulfate production wastewater(CSPW) is diff icult to treat because it contains high concentrations of organic matter, sulfate and residual antibiotics. I n order to improve the nitrogen removal effi ciency of CSPW, an effi cient ammoniaoxidation bacterial agent was added into a biofilm reactor to remove nitrogen from CSPW via nitrification-denitrification. The results showed that the reactor started up quickly, and its removal rate for ammonia-nitrogen(NRR) from CSPW reached 350 mg N L-1 d-1. In denitrif ication reactor, when NO3--N or NO2--N was the main constituents in CSPW, the removal rate for total nitrogen was 500 and 680 mg N L-1 d-1 respectively. The toxicity test showed that as model organisms, Chlorella vulgaris cells were apparently inhibited by CSPW nitrif ication infl uent, but no obvious inhibition was observed in nitrif ication effl uent. DGGE results revealed that microbial community on biofilm dealing with CSPW was obviously different with that of the artifi cial wastewater. T he treatment process not only improved the nitrogen removal effi ciency of CSPW, but also lessened biological toxicity of the CSPW, indicating its great potential in industrial application.
