China has recovered 11 452 meteorites from the Grove Mountains of Antarctica during five explorations of the region. The determination of chemical groups and petrography types in the meteorites is difficult. Traditional chemical classification methods for meteorites are destructive and require a lot of time for section preparation, but they also need substantial financial and human resources to complete fundamental classifications. Therefore, some researchers have attempted to establish a magnetic susceptibility classification technique for the meteorites that is non-destructive and efficient. Between 2003 and 2008, about 2 300 ordinary chondrites recovered from the Grove Mountains in Antarctica were classified by the resource-sharing platform responsible for polar samples and funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China. This paper comparatively studies the magnetic susceptibility and chemical classification methods of the upper meteorites to assess the suitability of their future application.
