An analysis on the relationship between the spatial-temporal characteristics of road traffic accident and the urban planning in the mega-city: a case study of Nanshan District in Shenzhen


Abstract:
Based on the spatial analysis function of ArcGis Map 10.1, the spatial distribution and characteristic performance of road traffic accidents in Nanshan District of Shenzhen from 2005 to 2014 is developed. We review the historic process of Shenzhen urban planning, construction and the detailed analysis on some street areas. From three aspects:urban spatial structure and the separation tendency of job-residence relationship, road system and density, built-environment and traffic management in central urban areas, we investigate the influence of the urban planning concepts/actual situation on traffic accidents. The study finds that ① the increase of job-residence spatial separation will cause the rise of accident proportion of express and main road system, ② the lack of the construction of sub-trunk road system will lead to the high incidence of road accident happened in the conjunction places between the express/main and the branch road systems, ③ the constructions of road network and urban traffic management in the central areas and the areas surrounding urban villages still lack effective input and enough attention. Reflecting on the urban road safety from the perspectives of the development of Shenzhen planning and construction problems, this study probes into the rationality of some related planning ideas and has certain theoretical value and practical guiding significance.
